What filmmaker Neil Blomkamp is doing is very smart. He's staying in the genre of high concept sci-fi films. With films having a ton of social commentary and meaning where he feels comfortable in and that he can sell easily to a worldwide audience. That doesn't mean each of his films will be a hit or a fan favorite. Case in point the beloved "District 9" and the lackluster for most "Elysium".
Nonetheless his films are to me personally at the peak of visual effects technical craftsmanship, contain a beautiful cooperation with actor Sharlto Copley and are not only about big action sequences. But also the larger reason we even fight in the first place. For justice, peace, humanity and freedom. Not just boom, kapow, look robots and more pew pew.
