Yesterday, at Disney's Expo D23 they announced the casting of the lead characters of the film. The ones chosen are relatively unknown actors Naomi Scott for Princess Jasmine, who most will have seen in the recent 'Power Rangers' film and Mena Massoud for Aladdin, who is the true unknown with a few credits in TV and Film, but nothing of relative fame.
The casting process of this production compared to the previous live action films such as 'Beauty and the Beast' was lengthy, due to the juggling act of hiring both talented and well known actors that also were required to be of Indian or Arabic descent. The production had already cast Will Smith as the Genie for the film to have big name attached to it, but their are also rumors floating around of Tom Hardy being cast as Jafar and we could only hope that it turns out to be true.
Aladdin will be directed by 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Snatch' director Guy Richie and written by 'Big Fish' screenwriter John August. No release date has been confirmed by Disney as of yet, but in all likelihood this will probably be released within the next 2 years in cinemas around the world.
