Oscars 2014 Winners & Thoughts

More than anything else this Oscar year will be remembered for Leonardo DiCaprio again losing out on a precious Oscar. This was anticipated correctly by most, as his role was less glamorous than McConaughey's and the film "Wolf of Wall Street" already got a bad rap through a private Academy screening. With some Academy members going as far as calling the film "filth" and "pornography".

Regarding the Best Picture pick, I am very happy with the Academy's choice in "12 Years a Slave". Yet they couldn't help themselves and reward the most popular film of the year "Gravity" in quite a few categories. And although Alfonso Cuaron is a fine director and did accomplish many technical feats in Gravity, they weren't accomplishments in orchestrating an awe inspiring narrative or a well constructed character arc.

Besides the "Gravity" love, the Academy's picks in general were reasonable and easy to predict. As the Oscar bait films were good this year and offered great moments in various subject matters and genres. Also everyone will not bicker over the technical and costume categories. Because truth be told, everybody is still bummed out about Leo and his negative Oscar win ratio.
